Tasmania's forests have evolved due to its climate, and the effects of bushfire. Tony Mount, a forest ecologist, now retired, after a career involving fire and silviculture research from 1957 to 1991, has authored two publications Tasmania's Ancient Bushfire Heritage and Managing Tasmania's Fire Environment based on a series of presentations he has given on the subject. Forest Practices Code 2000 (1742 KB)
The Forest Practices Act 1985 provides that the Forest Practices Code shall prescribe the manner in which forest practices are to be conducted so as to provide reasonable protection to the environment. The Code is issued by the Forest Practices Board, after extensive consultation and public comment. The Code provides a practical set of guidelines and standards for the protection of environmental values during forest operations.

Forestry is the only Australian industry sector that stores more greenhouse gases than it releases. In 2001, Australia’s plantations and managed forests stored a net 22.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is more than half of the carbon dioxide (42.5mt) emitted by all the passenger cars in Australia in that year.

On 13 May 2005, Prime Minister John Howard and Premier Paul Lennon signed an historic agreement to increase protection of Tasmania's forest and secure jobs. The agreement builds of the Regional Forest Agreement of 1997 with both governments contributing $250 million to revitalise the timber industry and preserve more old-growth forests.

Timber is the perfect, sustainable building material. It is strong, natural, renewable and has the lowest embodied energy of any major building material. It also stores atmospheric carbon. Buildings constructed from timber take less energy to make than similar brick, concrete or steel buildings.
